VMware Keynote - Virtualization's Impact on the Delivery of Healthcare IT Services

10/18/2010 4:30:00 PM

Learn how VMware is revolutionizing the next generation of computing-providing efficiency and flexibility at a time when both are critical to the future of Healthcare. Organizations can no longer afford to have more servers than beds, hundreds if not thousands of applications and clinical staff spending more time with their PC's than with their patients. In concert with the industries leading ecosystem partners VMware is enabling healthcare organizations to get back to the business of Healthcare.

Opening Keynote: Cloud Strategies for Health

10/19/2010 9:15:00 AM

Healthcare organizations will need to move quickly to understand and deploy cloud based strategies. New stimulus and compliance initiatives demand that healthcare organizations become dynamic, digital, and connected. Meaningful use guidelines require widespread integration with a host of other providers, labs, pharmacies, and patients. Private and public cloud architectures are being considered by a growing number of organizations as a possible solution for this challenge. Even if you don't own and operate a cloud, you will certainly begin to use cloud based services from others. This presentation will:

  • Highlight options and key decisions in selecting an architectural approach
  • Discuss pros and cons of various deployment models for health
  • Examine some early projects and vendor offerings
  • Focus on health specific requirements that create unique challenges for users and suppliers

Meaningful Use & Meaningful Results from Electronic Health Records

    10/19/2010 9:45:00 AM

With the passing of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in February 2009, U.S. provider organizations were granted a unique opportunity to recoup costs associated with the acquisition and implementation of much-needed EHR technology. However, the requirements for eligibility for ARRA payments include tight implementation deadlines alongside requirements for the demonstration of "meaningful use." These two requirements seem contradictory, as in practice, rushed IT implementations have historically meant less-than-optimal results. For this reason, it is critical that U.S. providers making EHR investments and implementations under ARRA deadlines leverage the learnings and best practices among existing early adopters in the industry. This will help ensure that their organizations achieve both statutory meaningful use and meaningful results from their EHR investments. U.S. providers clearly cannot afford a second chance to acquire and leverage EHR capabilities. This presentation will:

  • Provide an overview of the current understanding of the EHR opportunities presented by ARRA
  • Offer insights into the EHR vendor landscape
  • Discuss key learnings and best practices from Health Industry Insight's interactions with EHR early adopters

Advancing Health Care Delivery Through Technology Innovation

    10/19/2010 1:15:00 PM

Hospitals are making significant investments in new infrastructure to optimize operations, streamline communication, and improve outcomes. The need to reduce costs while meeting new user requirements is a challenge for even the most capable organization. Adding capabilities like CPOE, and advanced integration with third parties to qualify for stimulus money is also driving an accelerated replacement cycle for legacy architectures. Join us for a discussion of how innovative health organizations are utilizing infrastructure upgrades and enhancements to better meet the needs of patients while also improving the operations, communications, and quality of care at their institutions.

The New Provider Electronic Health Record

    10/19/2010 4:55:00 PM

With the advent of ARRA, healthcare reform and the newly-defined term meaningful use, providers are faced with challenges surrounding the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs). These include a mandate for implementation, deadlines for installing, adopting and optimizing results from EHRs, and a definition of meaningful use that takes EHRs beyond clinical documentation into sets of functionality that are relatively new for most providers, even early adopters of EHRs. The new EHR, as defined by the meaningful use requirements, must include, in addition to clinical documentation, functions such as HIE connectivity between inpatient and ambulatory systems, decision support , patient communication, clinical and business analytics and e-prescribing. This presentation will include a brief overview of the current state of meaningful use definitions and the upcoming deadlines for implementation, and presents IDC Health Insights data on provider sentiment and trends regarding adoption, investment, best practices, analytics, decision support and other functionality associated with the new EHR.

Getting it right means aligned investment in all core processing applications, the BI/Transparency Infrastructure and solutions, and in the right delivery and presentation strategies. This presentation will:

  • Provide the future evolution and best practice model for business intelligence and transparency solutions, including critical alignment among BI, care management, product development, performance, incentives, portal and quality initiatives
  • Reveal current healthcare payer BI investments strategies and priorities
  • Highlight leading and innovative vendor strategies across all core and BI markets
  • Provide early examples of emerging vendor and health plan strategies to provide actionable information and track results.
This session is followed by a panel discussion.

Connected Health IT Strategies: Making the Transition to Accountable Care

    10/20/2010 9:35:00 AM

Accountable care organizations and other new economic models developed to meet the demands of health reform will provide new opportunities for improving financial and clinical performance. The perfect alignment of drivers - health reform, cost, access, increased focus on managing chronic conditions, and an aging population - will help healthcare organizations justify investment in telemedicine and other connected health IT strategies over the next five years alongside investments in electronic medical records (EMRs), computerized provider order entry (CPOE) and health information exchange (HIE) technologies to qualify for ARRA incentives and avoid Medicare penalties starting in 2015.

    This presentation will:

  • Discuss the key trends driving connected health and the impact of legislation, including American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and health reform, on the outlook for connected health.
  • Present an overview of the connected health market and its components.
  • Examine some notable connected health pilot projects and other telemedicine initiatives.
